One of my favorite, cheap & easy, go-to whole wheat recipes. $0.65/Loaf
1 1/2 cup water (doesn't count as an ingredient on bread labels)
1/4 c local honey - $0.50
1/4 canola oil - $0.10
1 tbsp yeast - $0.05
1 tbsp vinegar $0.03
5 cups whole wheat flour $0.40
1/4 c vital wheat gluten $0.21
2 1/2 tsp salt $0.01
Total - $1.30/2 loaves
Mix wet ingredients. Add dry ingredients. Mix for 4 minutes using kitchen mixer. Shape into a ball. Cover and let rise for 2 hours.
Preheat oven to 450*. Gently divide dough into two loaves. Place on large cookie sheet. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 30 minutes.
Bake for 30 minutes. Top with butter.
Note: Baking at 450* with a pan of hot water on the bottom rack of the oven will give a chewy, artisan crust.
